Jeff Clark is a native of Massachusetts but has lived in the southeast for over 15 years. His interest in woodworking has been an ongoing passion for over 30 years. He combines different woods to provide contrast and beauty to the objects produced. Woods containing spalting are highly prized and used frequently. Included in the crafts at the Raleigh Street Gallery are cutting boards, wooden lamp bases, pencil holders, bud bases and candle holders. Aside from the cutting boards, all of the other items are turned on a lathe, either from a log of one wood variety or a laminate of many woods. Many of these come in different sizes to fit the setting in the household. The woods are from local North Carolina trees for the most part and include the following:
Black walnut
Black and wild cherry
Black gum
Eastern red cedar (the only softwood used)
Elm
Hickory
Maple
Poplar
Red, white and willow oak
Sweet gum
Sweet hackberry (favorite wood after black walnut)
Sycamore
Ocassional exotic hardwoods (e.g. purple heart, mahogany, etc)"
